Suspects Stephen Addae, Anthony Gyamfi and Gideon Adetola, said to be kingpins of the car snatching syndicate in Kumasi, have been nabbed by the police, following a tip-off.
The police are also on the heels of one Ali Sulemana, who is said to be among the group of hoodlums that had been snatching the taxi cabs with the intention of selling them to unsuspecting buyers.
The car snatchers modus operandi is that they, at gun-point, snatch taxi cabs from their drivers after they (robbers) had hired such vehicles to Great Gadeco area at Sepe Buokrom.
Gideon Adetola and Ali Sulemana, who purportedly do the snatching, drive them to Bekwai in the Ashanti Region where they (vehicles) are sprayed into new colours and their registration numbers changed.
DCOP Kofi Boakye, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander who was speaking at a press conference in Kumasi, said Anthony Gyamfi was the one responsible for spraying the vehicles and changing their registration numbers.
The stolen cars, which have been given new colours and registration numbers, are then taken to Stephen Addae at Diaso in the Central Region where they are sold for GH¢4,500 upwards.
DCOP Kofi Boakye said the police on July 13, 2014, acting upon information, went to Diaso and intercepted some of the stolen vehicles with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) stickers embossed on both sides; ‘and this helped us to locate and arrest Stephen Addae.’
Stephen Addae, the police chief said, led the police to apprehend Anthony Gyamfi and Gideon Adatora, adding that Ali Sulemana was able to escape arrest.
DCOP Kofi Boakye said upon interrogation, the three arrested suspects confessed to the crime and led the police to Diaso where ten stolen vehicles were retrieved, adding that four of the cars had been identified by their real owners.
